About
In two sentences
A non-periodic blog focusing on union strategies for freelancers and precarious workers.
Curated by Mattia Cavani, who has been part of the Board of Acta , the Italian Freelancers Union, since 2019 and currently serves as its President (2025–present).
Why this blog?
Across the globe, independent workers are finding new ways to organize, unionize, and reclaim their collective power. It is a vibrant, shifting landscape of experiments, setbacks, and brilliant innovations.
Italy — with a higher percentage of independent workers than most advanced economies — is a key laboratory for these movements. However, I’ve found that these experiences often circulate internationally only through academic research, which can be a slow process.
I created this minimal blog to bridge that gap, starting by translating Italian contributions into English. While it begins as a translation project, in the future I might expand it with original articles written directly in English.
About Mattia Cavani
Mattia Cavani is a freelance editor, ghostwriter and — most relevantly here — a union activist.
In 2019, he co-founded Redacta , the section of Acta dedicated to freelancers in the book publishing industry. Since 2025, he has served as the President of Acta, the Italian freelance union.
Alongside his organizing work, Mattia lectures at universities and contributes to both militant and academic publications—many of which are collected in the Elsewhere section of this site.
Since 2020, he has also been a member of the Officina Primo Maggio editorial staff.

The means of distribution
This site is built with Hugo following the POSSE principle: Publish on Own Site, Syndicate Elsewhere.
I use social media only for distribution (AKA Circulation ), while keeping the content on a platform I completely own.
Inspired by A website to destroy all websites , I’ve opted for a minimal, independent architecture to ensure this space remains fast, private, and free.
